Hello,
I am Laura Stronach, and together with my husband Allan we run Island Campers.
We were both born and brought up in Shetland and now live in Tingwall, just outside Lerwick. We live in an old farmhouse which we are refurbishing.
Allan has his own body shop which his father started in 1973. His dad had a few campers he used to rent out in the 80′s and Allan has always had a keen interest in them. I have a hairdressing salon in Lerwick (Studio 4 Hair) which I’ve been running since 1996. Last year we moved to our new premises on Harbour St in Lerwick.
We’ve been together for 13 years and our first baby was born in May 2006. We have travelled quite a lot in that time, always trying to discover somewhere new. I have to confess that, at first, we were looking for somewhere to move to, but the more we travelled, the more we began to appreciate what we have right here at home.
The Office
When you call us you’ll get through to the reception at Allan’s body shop where Sonia (Allan’s mum) or Cheryl will answer the telephone – Allan should be out working in the workshop so if he answers the phone you know he’s skiving in the office! They will be able to assist you in making bookings for the campers and any other enquiries that you have – they’ll call out to me if more research needs to be done!! Allan has sourced the vans and has himself restored and serviced them, they will be kitted out and ready to go with whatever has been arranged for you at the garage. We can collect you from either the ferry terminal or the airport. You will be able to reach us there whenever you need us, and we will also give you a mobile number to call if you have any difficulty during your stay.
Shetland
We love Shetland & what it has to offer, we’re passionate about the outdoors and adventure and we love VWs. In Shetland we have the possibility to combine all of these in an environment of many opportunities with wind, sea and wide open space. “Our Rock” is beautiful and we want to help others discover it too. We feel the best holidays are camping holidays where you are not restricted by timetables or schedules. Shetland has great roads to travel on and the midsummer daylight hours are perfect for camping as it never really gets dark.
VW’s
We first became passionate about VWs when Allan got his first VW Golf GTI back before we were married and since then I have always driven a Golf. As a couple we’ve had Golfs, Beetles, and Campers. We travelled down the east coast of Australia in a camper van with friends and tents and had the best time. In Shetland we recommend; fishing, camping, climbing, canoeing, biking, trekking, sailing, and exploring. We can help you arrange any of these activities. We want to help others appreciate our islands and what we cannot provide we’ll help you find. Self catering at its best, what an adventure.
